I also came to the opinion that I almost like audio books better than movies. Peter, Edmund, Lucy and the others might get into Narnia by “magic,” but it is not a magic they can control-quite unlike the Harry Potter series, where Harry is sent to school to learn magic. Even if magic is used, it is never used by the human characters, and it is never used lightly.

It made me think back to some talks at the Family Life conference, where Narnia and the Harry Potter series came up with the old question of why is one okay in Christian circles and the other often not. My favourite is the last sentence: “ All their life in this world and all their adventures in Narnia had only been the cover and the title page: now at last they were beginning Chapter One of the Great Story which no one on earth has read: which goes on forever: in which every chapter is better than the one before.” Maybe it’s just because I’m a book-lover, but that’s the most beautiful description of Heaven that I’ve ever heard. Yes, all the Narnia books are allegory, yet The Last Battle had so much in it that one could ponder and unpack. Lewis’ theology is clearest, and I was amazed by the underlying meanings in the story. The host had also commented that this is the book where C. Yet as we listened to it, I found myself changing my opinion (though my favourite is probably still The Voyage of the Dawn Treader). I remembered it as a slightly dark book, a little hard to get into, with less of a story than the other books. I was surprised when the radio host introduced The Last Battle as the all-time favourite in the Narnia chronicles. We listened to The Horse and His Boy and The Voyage of the Dawn Treader (two of my favourite books) on the first trip, and The Silver Chair and The Last Battle on the second trip. On our last trips to the city, friends of ours lent us the Chronicles of Narnia radio theatre. Thumbs up for the REAL Narnia stories.Homeschooling because of covid19? Browse my tips & reviews!

Especially Bree.īut as for the rest of the adaptations, I think they were done superbly. The people who played Bree and Hwin also didn't fit their parts, I don't think.

For one thing, in the plot between the prince, the Tisroc (may he live forever), and the Grand Vizier, they leave the Grand Vizier out!Īnd, in the best part of the whole story, where Rabadash gets caught on a hook in the wall as he cries, "The bolt of Tash falls from above!", they don't explain it enough, making it much less funny, which means that, when he is brought to trial later on, and says, "The bolt of Tash falls from above, they leave out the part where Corin says, "Does it get caught on a hook halfway?"Īnother thing is that Aravis sounds quite a bit older than she should (her voice, not how she talks), and Shasta sounds a bit too young. The only one that I don't listen to a lot is The Horse and His Boy, because I think they did the least good job on that. About two years ago, I got the whole set (I'd checked some of them out from the library before that) for my birthday.

I sort of grew up with the FotF LWW and MN, and I've always loved them. Sound designer Nathan Jones reveals how they create armor and sword sound effects. Sometimes it sounded right and sometimes it sounded disgusting.”

I went out and bought big rows of ribs and started ripping the skin off of the ribs. On creating sounds for the VDT radio drama:Īrnold: “I remember one of the most difficult portions of Dawn Treader that I had to create was the sequence where Eustace goes into the cave and becomes a dragon, and then eventually he tears the skin off so that he can be a boy again. Then they’ll know the things they got wrong. They can hear the more…accurate version before they watch the film.

And so, it felt like the perfect tie-in to sort of lead up to the film. Number three, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader. Q: Guys, why are we kicking off with VDT?Īrnold: “Well, I think most people in our audience are aware of the fact that, coming up in December, the next Chronicles of Narnia film is being released.
